Settings

There are countless possibilities and occasions to use our media products. There are just as many opportunities and occasions for developing your own media products. We would like to present some of these settings to you here.

Whether short-term and without preparation, or as a long-term media project – interactive, playful and varied learning with storytelling is possible in every setting. While an active discussion and processing of a selected media product is particularly interesting in class due to the time resources available, in other settings, such as working groups or theme weeks, the independent production of a media product is also an option.

Even in the most unthinkable moments, such as unplanned substitution hours, before grades are awarded or shortly before the start of the holiday, the media products offer a welcome change that promotes motivation, encourages users to participate and at the same time makes them aware of a certain topic.

  • Development in individual and group work:
The selected media product is worked out in individual / group work on computers / with tablets. This is followed by a joint reflection phase to discuss the various experiences. Appropriate questions can be found in the respective data sheet of the media product. A follow-up method can, if necessary, further deepen the experience and newly acquired skills.
  • Joint development in the class:
The media product can be presented in front of the class using a whiteboard or an internet-enabled computer with a projector and, if necessary, speakers. Depending on the medium, the film is viewed, the audio is listened to or the text is read together and then the possible alternatives that are offered as part of the media product are discussed. What are the advantages, what are the disadvantages? When the class has agreed on a path, the story continues accordingly (For voting, please use our voting sets at the download materials). After completing the media product, the experiences are discussed. You will find relevant questions in the respective data sheet.
  • Conception and implementation of your own media product:
Note: Developing your own media product is very time-consuming and should therefore be planned with sufficient time resources. Working in small groups is ideal for implementing your own media product. Together, each group develops a story on a specific, predetermined topic. You are welcome to use our interactive storytelling laboratory, which will guide you step by step through the development of a story and a media product. Alternatively, you can also use our storytelling card set, with which you will find a compact summary of the essential steps for developing the plot and designing the characters. You can download and print out the card set here.

A themed week offers more extensive possibilities than individual school hours in the classroom. Accordingly, it makes sense here to go beyond the pure “processing” of media products and to develop your own media products. We recommend the following procedure:

  • Editing of selected media products on a specific topic in order to familiarize oneself with the content as well as with the structure.
  • Joint discussion of the essential aspects of a story: what must a story have and what not? How is a change of perspective possible? How can users learn something from a story?
  • Joint development of the storytelling laboratory or processing in group work – At the same time, initial ideas, approaches and points can be recorded on the storytelling laboratory worksheet provided
  • Group work to develop your own story. Depending on age and knowledge, it is advisable to start with a text-based story. This is much less costly than audio or video productions and offers a first impression of and insight into interactive stories.
  • Use of the storytelling card set to develop individual project ideas
  • Realization of the stories with the free program “Twine”
  • Presentation of the resulting media products and, if necessary, publication on a platform

Phase 1: Processing of media products and getting to know interactive stories

  • Editing of selected media products on a specific topic in order to familiarize oneself with the content as well as with the structure of interactive stories.
  • Gathering examples of where interactive stories can be found and analyzing them together
  • Joint discussions on the processed media products: How are the stories structured? What did you like? What is not so good? How did it feel to have to make decisions for a certain character? Etc.
  • Implementation of practical connection methods around the playful development of stories and dealing with interactive stories (you can find selected ideas on our data sheets for the individual media products).

Phase 2: Building interactive stories – step by step

  • Joint development of the storytelling laboratory or processing in group work – At the same time, initial ideas, approaches and points can be recorded on the storytelling laboratory worksheet provided
  • Joint discussion of the essential aspects of a story: what must a story have and what not? How is a change of perspective possible? How can users learn something from a story?
  • Playful writing and research exercises on various topics

Phase 3: The production and implementation of your own interactive stories

  • Individual or group work to develop your own story. Depending on age and knowledge, it is advisable to start with a text-based story. This is much less costly than audio or video productions and offers a first impression of and insight into interactive stories.
  • Use of the storytelling card set to develop individual project ideas
  • Realization of the stories with the free Twine program
  • Presentation of the resulting media products and, if necessary, publication on a platform
  • With increasing skills, the working group participants can also implement audio and video products
